Here are some commonly asked questions regarding Chelation Therapy:
How would I come in contact with heavy metals?
We absorb dangerous toxins from our environment continually. Sources include car exhaust, cosmetics, cigarettes, batteries, vinyl products, candles, tattoos, household chemicals, dental work, and even foods. Toxic substances that can be of concern include lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, and even copper and iron. All of these may result in the development of serious health concerns and chronic illness.
What is the history of this therapy?
Medical chelation has been used since 1956, originally for the treatment of cardiovascular disease in those persons who were gravely ill. Since then, many trials and studies have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of chelation for a variety of conditions, all showing positive results. It is even being used as a preventive measure to promote continued health and a more youthful stamina. Chelation is popular the world over.
What kinds of conditions does chelation help?
Chelation has shown benefits in many areas, including:
- Improved circulation and decreased blood clot formation
- Improved lung function
- Reduced cancer risks and mortality
- Improvement in cardiovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease
- Improved cognitive function and emotional status
- Hair loss reversal
- Lessened varicose veins and age spots
- Lessened effects or reversal of complications of diabetes, including nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy
- Decreased insulin requirements
- Lessened fatigue and improved concentration
- Improved kidney function
- Cosmetic improvements such as more lustrous hair, brighter eyes, and more youthful appearance
What does the procedure involve?
While you sit in a comfortable recliner, an IV is administered containing normal saline and a chelating agent called EDTA. Nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin B may also be added to enhance your overall health and absorption. The IV is administered slowly over about 2 ½ hours. There is minimal discomfort and you can resume normal activities immediately following the infusion.
The EDTA is an amino acid that binds with the heavy metals in your body and excretes them through the kidneys. Metal molecules have extra positive charges and EDTA has extra negative charges – so they bond together easily.
Is it safe? Are there side effects?
Chelation with EDTA is approved by the FDA for heavy metal removal. To date, over 1 million people
have received over 20 million infusions for chelation therapy.
As with any medical treatment, side effects may appear, but they are often minor in chelation therapy.
Side effects may include soreness or bruising at the site of the injection, low blood sugar, low zinc levels, or kidney stress. Lab work for kidney function is monitored regularly during the chelation program. Oral supplements may also be recommended to increase the effectiveness of the therapy.
How often should chelation be done?
Our recommended protocol is for 21 treatments, one to two times per week depending on your preference. Positive changes can be seen in as little as 4 treatments. Occasionally people request more than 21 treatments, with 40 being the usual max. After that, maintenance treatments are recommended once or twice per month due to continued re-exposure in the environment.
Our protocol is well-rounded and geared at improving your total health and well-being. It will include office visits with our MD and naturopath, lab work, and careful oversight from all of the Forum Health staff. You will be given a detailed chelation therapy protocol with costs at your first visit here at our clinic.
What other IV therapies are offered?
Forum Health also offers IV Vitamin C Drips for patients needing extra support for their immune systems, as in cases of cancer, Lyme disease, recovering from surgeries, and even in acute illnesses.
IV Myers Cocktails are also available, containing important nutrients such as vitamins B and C for those who are nutritionally challenged or are experiencing extreme fatigue.
